Nevertheless, entering any abrasives distributor&#8217;s catalog, you will see that there is no silicon carbide that is a homogeneous product. On the contrary, this material exists in two major types \u2013 black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide. They may seem quite alike \u2013 both are hard\u00a0.\u00a0They are\u00a0formed by melting silica sand and carbon under high temperature, followed by spontaneous crystallization. However, their differences are too great to choose the more appropriate type for a certain operation. The key chemical process involved in the manufacturing of both materials is identical:<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SiO2 + 3C \u2192 SiC + 2CO<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The only difference in the production of both materials is in the quality of the starting materials used and in the furnace conditions. Black silicon carbide is manufactured using silica sand that is a little bit impure along with sawdust, leading to a smaller content of SiC in the product. The green silicon carbide, in its turn, is manufactured using more pure quartz sand in special conditions with salt sometimes being used as well. Both the black and green silicon carbide types have hardness values of about 9.2 to 9.6 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, and thus are harder than corundum (aluminum oxide), second only to abrasive materials like boron carbide and diamond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The green variety of silicon carbide is generally harder than the black one; and in microhardness tests the value will be slightly higher due to its higher level of purity and more uniform crystal structure. In essence, this means that green SiC grains will have more defined fracturing and sharper cutting edge during application. The hardness value of the black silicon carbide is very high and more than enough for most grinding\/cutting purposes, although its values may fluctuate slightly due to impurities in the crystal structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Purity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>And here the two materials show their greatest differences. Black silicon carbide has a SiC composition of about 9<\/strong><strong>0<\/strong><strong>% to 98% while the rest of the material consists of free carbon, silicon dioxide, iron oxide and other impurities that are leftovers from the initial materials. And it&#8217;s these impurities that make black SiC the way it looks &#8211; dark with the metallic-black or bluish-black color.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The process of production of green silicon carbide is based on the use of much more pure quartz sand and carbon materials making the SiC content in the material equal to 98.5% to 99% or even greater. It&#8217;s these lower amounts of free silicon and other impurities that make the green silicon carbide look light green or emerald colored. And of course, the higher purity results in better quality of the abrasive grains, its more predictable properties as well as lower tendency to overheat during processing of some materials.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>As the purity influences the physical properties of the abrasive it becomes the key parameter that determines &#8220;the grade&#8221; of the two silicon carbides and explains the higher cost of green one.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Toughness<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Toughness, in abrasive technology terms, denotes resistance to fracturing upon contact with an opposing workpiece, which is where black silicon carbide comes out as an advantage.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Black silicon carbide is tougher than green silicon carbide. The presence of higher amount of impurities and inner stresses inside the material enables the grain to better endure impact and not to shatter during the contact with a workpiece. In this case, black silicon carbide is ideal for grinding of materials that involve mechanical stress (low tensile strength, cast iron, and non-ferrous metals), where maintaining the edge and avoiding grain breakdown is more important than keeping the maximum sharpness.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Green silicon carbide is more pure and crystallized, hence it is much more brittle, than the former material. This implies easier fracturing, which is actually the feature of the material that is highly desired in some cases. Green SiC grain breaks and creates a new very sharp cutting edge, which is called self-sharpening and enables the use of green SiC for precise grinding processes, where maintaining sharp edge is more essential than durability, while the rate of wear of grains is increased in the latter case.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Application Areas<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With these differences in hardness, purity, and strength, it&#8217;s not hard to understand why each type of silicon carbide finds its use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Black Silicon Carbide is the more versatile material. Its strength and lower price make it great for:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1.Grating and finishing of cast iron, non-ferrous metals (brass, copper, and aluminum, for example), as well as non-metallic materials (glass, ceramics, rubber, stone)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2.Production of bonded abrasives (grinding wheels, whetstones, and sandpapers for universal purposes)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3.Sandblasting and other operations requiring strength under impacts rather than the sharpest edge<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4.Refractory products and metallurgical additions, where even higher silicon carbide content doesn&#8217;t increase price dramatically but provides excellent thermal and chemical resistance<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">5.Water jet cutting and other blasting operations<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Due to higher purity and self-sharpening nature, Green Silicon Carbide is used mostly for demanding applications:<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1.Grinding hard and brittle materials like cemented carbide, optical glass, ceramics, and gemstones<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2.Honing and lapping applications that require very fine surface finish<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3.For manufacturing high precision grinding wheels which are used for grinding tools and cutters, particularly carbide tools<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4.In semiconductor and electronics industries due to purity requirements<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5.Refractory and technical ceramics applications where purity plays a direct role<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>To sum up, if you require only grinding of metal materials and want something durable, Black Silicon Carbide will be the best option. Otherwise, when grinding hard and brittle materials with high precision surface finish or if purity of the material plays an important role in the process, then Green Silicon Carbide will be a better Softer and stronger materials (cast iron, non-ferrous metals) usually match better with black SiC. Stronger and more brittle materials (carbides, ceramics, glass) require green SiC.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2.How much does the sharpness of the edge play against the grain durability? If the properties like self-sharpening and good finish are needed more, then it would be better to choose green.
